LAWRENCE -- Francis Yang, a doctoral student in piano at the University of Kansas, won first prize in the Kansas Music Teacher's Association Collegiate Artist Competition Oct. 31 at Kansas State University, Manhattan.

As the top prize winner in the state competition, Yang will proceed to the district level auditions scheduled for January in Minot, S.D.

A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Yang studies piano with Richard Angeletti at KU. He was a finalist in the 1998 Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition in May in Canada.

Another of Angeletti's students, Lori Dunn, a high school senior from Winchester, won the high school division of the KMTA competition and will also perform for the district auditions.
