Center for Research offers commercialization seminar

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Center for Research is sponsoring a half-day seminar for KU researchers interested in the commercialization of science and technology from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 9.

The seminar, "Understanding the Basics of Entrepreneurship Within the University," is geared to anyone who has a technological or scientific idea with commercial potential, and to those who are interested in developing businesses.

The seminar will offer an overview of the commercial process, including the following topics:
 • Issues in technology transfer and intellectual property, Jim Baxendale, KU
 • Sources of capital, Charlie Becker, venture fund manager
 • Company formation and incorporation, Kevin Sweeny, Shook, Hardy and Bacon
 • Industry valuation of technology, Steve Lufkin, Midwest Research Institute
 • Business plans, Sanjay Mishra, KU
 • Sources of local support, Kansas Innovation Center

The program begins at 1 p.m. in the Malott Room of the Kansas Union, preceded at 11:45 a.m. by a complimentary lunch in the union parlors. The afternoon will conclude with a networking reception from 5 to 6 p.m.
