Author Leslea Newman to discuss gay marriage, homophobia and censorship April 19

LAWRENCE -- Author Leslea Newman will present a lecture on gay marriage at 8 p.m. Monday, April 19, in Alderson Auditorium of the Kansas Union at the University of Kansas.

Newman wrote "Heather Has Two Mommies," the first children's book to portray lesbian families in a positive way. Her multimedia presentation, "Heather's Mommy Speaks Out: Homophobia, Censorship and Family Values," will provide insight about the public controversy over gay marriage in the United States. The presentation is free and open to the public. The author also will be available for a book signing after the presentation.

Newman's appearance is part of a monthlong effort to raise awareness about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues. The student group Queers and Allies is in the midst of its traditional weeklong Pride Week, featuring several educational and social programs targeted at supporting the issues of individuals who identify as LGBT at KU and in the Lawrence community.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Coordinator and the Center for Campus Life sponsor Newman's talk. For more information, contact the Center for Campus Life at (785) 864-4861.
