KU Edwards Campus to offer public administration program this fall

OVERLAND PARK -- The University of Kansas Edwards Campus will launch an undergraduate public administration program this fall. The degree-completion program will include two to three courses, with plans to expand in 2005.

"This program provides professionals in public service an opportunity to receive an excellent education from a renowned university," said Tom Longoria, director of undergraduate studies for the public administration program. "KU Edwards Campus is a rapidly growing institution and we want public administration to be part of that growth."

The professors teaching courses at Edwards also teach at the main KU campus in Lawrence. In the latest U.S. News rankings, KU's Department of Public Administration had three top 10 programs and a top 20 program: first in the city management/urban policy specialization, 10th in the overall "public affairs" field, seventh in public management and 17th for public finance and budgeting.

The strong reputation of the faculty is a great asset of the Edwards Campus and was a factor in creating the program.

"The influence our faculty carries throughout the academic community helped us get a high rating," said Longoria. "We believe our reputation will attract a large group of talented public service professionals."

The degree-completion program allows KU Edwards Campus undergraduates the opportunity to earn a degree while balancing work and family obligations.

The goal of the KU Edwards Campus is to serve the workforce, economic and community development needs of the area. The Edwards Campus does so by offering 25 graduate and degree-completion programs. In its 10-year history, KU Edwards Campus has graduated nearly 3,000 students and contributed an estimated $208 million to the Johnson County economy.
