MEDIA ADVISORY: Press conference for ex-Navy secretary, author James Webb Wednesday at KU

The media are invited to meet:

 • WHO: Former Secretary of the Navy and best-selling author James Webb

 • WHEN: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 28

 • WHERE: Governors Room, Kansas Union (fifth floor), University of Kansas

Webb is at KU to deliver the 2004 Walter S. Sutton Ethics Lecture at 7 p.m. April 28 in Woodruff Auditorium of the Kansas Union.

JAMES WEBB
Webb became secretary of the Navy in 1987 under President Ronald Reagan and resigned a year later after refusing to agree with the reduction of the Navy's force structure during congressionally mandated budget cuts. More recently, he has been a strong vocal critic of President George W. Bush's decision to go to war in Iraq.

Webb, who served with the 5th Marine Regiment in Vietnam and received the Navy Cross, the Silver Star Medal, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts, has written six best-selling novels, including "Fields of Fire," considered by many to be the classic novel of the Vietnam War. His original story, "Rules of Engagement," was made into a movie starring Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson.

THE SUTTON LECTURE
Since 1993 the International Center for Ethics in Business and the KU School of Business have presented the Walter S. Sutton Lecture Series, made possible by Betsey G. Sutton in memory of Walter Sutton. Walter Sutton received a bachelor's degree in business from KU in 1939. He served as managing partner for the firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. before its merger with KPMG, which formed KPMG Peat Marwick. He served on the executive committee from 1954 to 1975.
