KU and University of Paris, Sorbonne, sign agreement of cooperation

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas has signed an agreement of cooperation with the University of Paris, Sorbonne, to pursue further collaborations between the two institutions.

Diana Carlin, dean of the Graduate School and International Programs, signed the agreement along with officials from the University of Paris on March 22 during a trip to Paris for alumni meetings and visits with partner institutions.

The two institutions have agreed to joint research activities, scholar exchanges, jointly sponsored activities such as symposiums and study abroad programs, and exchanges of academic materials.

"The University of Kansas has many excellent programs in France, and the addition of a university as prestigious as the University of Paris to the list will provide even more opportunities for students, faculty, and researchers to engage in international activities," Carlin said. "Internationalization in the 21st century is about more than sending undergraduate students to study abroad. Graduate research and faculty research collaborations are equally important. By encouraging research and teaching collaboratives, students and faculty across both campuses will be better prepared for the challenges of a global society."

The University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne, a leading institution for 800 years, is one of the largest universities in France. Some 40,000 students are enrolled in 14 teaching and degree departments and five institutes offering degrees in the humanities, law, mathematics, computer science, economics, political science and management.

KU has signed approximately 40 agreements of cooperation with universities all over the world. Such agreements usually are the first step toward further collaboration, faculty research, student exchange and special programs.

Current exchanges in France include undergraduate programs at the Catholic University in Angers and at University of France Comte in Besan¨on; the graduate direct exchange in Ecole Supˇrieure de Commerce, Clermont-Ferrand; summer language programs in Strasbourg and Paris; and a summer program, NEGOCIA (Academie Commerciale Internationale and NEGOSUP), in Paris.
