Related news release: KU to honor 40 high school seniors from Jackson, Nemaha counties at Holton
LAWRENCE -- The Kansas Alumni Association and the Kansas University Endowment Association on Feb. 23 will honor a Holton KU alumna for her service to the University of Kansas.
Leslie McDaniel McManus, who recently moved to Illinois City, Ill., from Holton, will receive the Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award to recognize her longtime support of the Kansas Honors Program. Kansas Alumni Association representatives Carolyn Barnes, director of the Kansas Honors Program, and Dr. Linda Duston Warren, chair of the Kansas Alumni Association board of directors, will recognize McManus for her efforts.
The recognition will be part of the Kansas Honors Program dinner at the First United Methodist Church, 1401 W. Fourth, Holton. Forty high school seniors from Jackson and Nemaha counties will be honored at the event.
McManus served as a local coordinator for the Kansas Honors Program for 17 years. She earned a degree in journalism from KU in 1979. Following college, McManus was the editor of the Holton Recorder, and beginning in 1998, she worked for Ogden Publications as editor and editor-in-chief of its Farm Collectibles Group of publications. McManus has two sons, Alex and Calvin, and recently relocated to Illinois City, Ill.
The Alumni Association created the Mildred Clodfelter Alumni Award in 1986 to honor volunteers who serve as KU ambassadors in their communities. Clodfelter earned a bachelor's degree from KU in 1941 and worked at the university for 47 years, 42 at the Alumni Association. She retired in 1986 and lives in Lawrence.
Since 1971, the alumni and endowment associations, with the help of more than 160 alumni volunteers statewide, have sponsored Kansas Honors Program events to honor the top 10 percent of Kansas high school seniors.
