Energy efficiency improvements at KU to affect traffic on Sunnyside Avenue

LAWRENCE -- Traffic on Sunnyside Avenue near Haworth Hall at the University of Kansas will be restricted Friday, Feb. 13, as crews continue implementing a campuswide plan to improve energy efficiency.

Sunnyside Avenue will be completely blocked in front of Haworth from 7 to 9 a.m. while a crane is put into place at the loading dock on the south side of the building. During that time, dead-end signs will be placed near the north ends of Naismith Drive and Illinois Street.

Once the crane is in place, one lane of restricted traffic will reopen in both directions. Contractors will provide traffic control during the disruption, which is scheduled to end by 5 p.m.

Between 20 and 30 parking stalls near the loading dock also will be blocked during the work.

Heavy-equipment crews will use the crane to remove two cooling towers from the roof of Haworth Hall, and a new fan will be lifted to the ninth-floor mechanical room.

Chevron Energy Solutions, an engineering-based energy services company specializing in energy performance contracting and turnkey energy efficiency projects, is coordinating the effort.

A 2002 audit of energy usage covered more than 5.9 million gross square feet in all buildings, including the steam heating system and power plants. Auditors also evaluated the design of new facilities and pending renovation projects to ensure that energy efficiency is an integral part of the design.

This approach was made possible by the 2000 Kansas Legislature when it approved "performance contracting," a financial concept for energy conservation improvements for all state agencies. Through performance contracting, energy efficiency improvements can be funded through the energy savings they produce.

The energy audit followed on the heels of a successful energy conservation effort led by David Shulenburger, provost and executive vice chancellor, in 2000-01.
