Former New York Times editor to headline KU media and law conference

LAWRENCE -- Former New York Times managing editor Gerald Boyd will be the featured speaker for the 17th annual Media and the Law Seminar, scheduled for Friday, April 30, at the Fairmont Hotel, 401 Ward Pkwy. in Kansas City, Mo.

Boyd was New York Times managing editor in May 2003, when the newspaper disclosed journalistic fraud by staff reporter Jayson Blair. Boyd resigned in the ensuing controversy. He had helped the Times win Pulitzer Prizes for reporting on the 1993 World Trade Center bombing; a 2000 series, "How Race Is Lived in America"; and coverage of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The seminar is sponsored by the University of Kansas, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association Media Law Committee and the American Bar Association TIPS Media Law Committee, with contributions from Media/Professional Insurance, the Kansas City Star and First Media Insurance Specialists Inc.

Each spring the seminar draws close to 300 members of the legal and journalism professions from across the country. Panel discussions this year will include liability risks news media face if reporters fabricate news or commit plagiarism; how attorneys, editors and producers can address potential fabrication, plagiarism or staging before publication or broadcast; legal, public relations and trial implications of a reporter or editor error; the "embedding" of reporters with U.S. troops during the war in Iraq; and insurance coverage issues related to reporter misconduct.

Continuing legal education credit will be available for Kansas and Missouri attorneys.
