2 KU student playwrights' works selected for Kansas City 10-minute play festival

LAWRENCE ‹ Plays by two University of Kansas students are among 13 10-Minute Plays have been selected by Potluck Productions for its annual Women's Playwriting Festival Mar. 5 to 14 at the Just Off Broadway Theatre in Penn Valley Park, 3051 Central St., Kansas City, Mo.

Judges selected "A Test of Will" by Elizabeth Dean, Bucyrus junior in English and creative writing, and "Last Cigarette" by Carol Dias da Silva, Rio de Janiero, Brazil, senior in English and creative writing, from more than 100 entries from women playwrights within 500 miles of Kansas City. Works by eight playwrights were selected for the festival. The KU student plays were written for a beginning playwriting class taught by Paul Stephen Lim, professor of English.

Lim said the ingenuity of Dean's work is that it is a two-character play about a young woman and her boyfriend's apprehensiveness about whether or not she might be pregnant, "and a home pregnancy test takes 10 minutes so we find out at the end of the play whether or not she's pregnant." Dean, a graduate of Louisburg High School, is the daughter of Michael and Mary Dean of Bucyrus.

Carol Dias da Silva's "Last Cigarette" is being produced for the second time. Last year it was one of eight plays performed at the Region 5 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The region includes Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. The two characters are two men in a bar. Lim described it as a dialogue between "a man who is breaking up with his girlfriend being consoled by the proverbial understanding bartender who has his own private agenda. " She is the daughter of Jočo Carlos Dias da Silva and Rosaria Gomes Dias da Silva and a high school graduate of Colegio Santo Agostinho.

Performance dates are 8 p.m. Mar. 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13, and at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Mar. 7 and 14. Ticket prices are $10 per person or $8 for prepaid groups of 10. Admittance is $5 to a preview performance at 8 p.m. Mar. 4.

For the last 10 years, Potluck Productions has been producing plays by emerging women playwrights. Phil Kinen is director, and producers are Joyce Slater, D.K. Evenson and Glendora Davis.
