Korean women's choir to present free concert at KU Feb. 1 at Kansas Union

LAWRENCE -- The Seoul Ladies Singers, one of Korea's premier women's choirs, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, in the Kansas Union ballroom at the University of Kansas. The free concert is presented by the KU Center for East Asian Studies.

The performance will include many traditional Korean songs and will be a part of the group's 2004 North American tour, which will take them to locations including Denver, Colo.; Des Moines, Iowa; and Salt Lake City, Utah. It precedes their trip to the Alliance World Festival of Women's Singing, where the Seoul Ladies Singers will be the artists in residence.

The conductor, Eui Joong Yoon, is widely regarded as one of Korea's most prominent choral conductors. He has been the director of the Seoul Ladies Singers since 1999. He holds master's and doctoral degrees in choral conducting from the University of Cincinnati's Conservatory of Music.

While in Lawrence, the women also will spend a day with the University of Kansas choirs. They will present a public workshop on Korean music and dance at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall.

The Center for East Asian Studies also will host a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. Feb. 2 at Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread Ave. Anyone wishing to attend should bring a dish to share. All of the choir members will stay with host families in Lawrence.

The performance is co-sponsored by the Kansas Asia Scholars, the KU Department of Music and Dance, the KU Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the KU Office of International Programs.
