Kansas Public Radio to broadcast governor's State of the State address

LAWRENCE -- Facing a massive budget shortfall, uncertain economic times and a court mandate to reform education funding, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is expected to have a lot to say during her annual State of the State address.

Kansas Public Radio at the University of Kansas will broadcast her speech live at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12. KPR also will carry the Republican response to her speech during this special one-hour broadcast.

Anchoring the coverage will be KPR News Director J. Schafer. KPR Statehouse Bureau Chief Peter Hancock will provide legislative insight and analysis after the speech. Laura Lorson, KPR "Morning Edition" host, will produce the broadcast.

"It has become an annual tradition for KPR to carry the governor's State of the State address live and in its entirety so that our listeners have a chance to hear the whole message for themselves, without having to wait for a condensed radio version of the speech or a paraphrased newspaper version the next day," Schafer said. "It takes a lot of work but we consider it to be a public service for our audience."

Using a satellite uplink, KPR's coverage of the speech will be carried by High Plains Public Radio, based in Garden City, KCUR 89.3-FM in Kansas City, Mo., and possibly KMUW 89.1-FM in Wichita. KPR is providing the program free of charge to these stations.

Kansas Farm Bureau will be the exclusive underwriter for KPR's coverage.

KPR, licensed to KU, broadcasts on KANU 91.5-FM in Lawrence, KANH 89.7-FM in Emporia, KANV 91.3-FM in Olsburg-Manhattan and K210CR 89.9-FM in Atchison.
