Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute selects KU senior for summer internship

LAWRENCE -- Raymond Anthony Rico, a University of Kansas senior from Kansas City, Kan., is one of 30 outstanding Latino undergraduates selected to participate in the nation's most prestigious Hispanic internship program by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI).

Rico is majoring in political science with a minor in public service and civic leadership at KU. He is the son of Gregorio and Ruth Rico, Kansas City, Kan. He is a 2001 Sumner Academy of Arts and Science graduate and attended Kansas City, Kan., Community College.

CHCI is regarded as the nation's leading Hispanic nonprofit and nonpartisan educational organization. The CHCI Congressional Summer Internship selects 30 outstanding Latino undergraduates nationwide to spend eight weeks in Washington, D.C., providing them with a behind-the-scenes look at how the U.S. government functions. Rico will work in the office of U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Kan., while benefiting from the program's emphasis on leadership development, work experience, community service and learning.

"History has shown that as a CHCI program participant, Raymond Anthony will be an agent for change in America by emerging into leadership capacities where Hispanics are rarely seen," says Ingrid M. Duran, CHCI president and chief executive officer. "As one of 30 of the most promising young Hispanic leaders in the United States, Raymond Anthony will continue a national trend of increased Latino leadership for all of America."

As an intern in Moore's Washington office, Rico will work on constituent communications, monitor hearings, conduct legislative research and assist with general office operations. Rico's work experience will be enhanced by weekly leadership developmental sessions, during which he will meet with national leaders and discuss current policy matters.
