Exchange talks, meetings highlight KU chancellor's trip to Asia

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway will be the guest of honor at a reception Friday in Tokyo at the residence of hosts U.S. Ambassador Howard Baker and former U.S. Sen. Nancy Kassebaum Baker.

The event for KU alumni, donors and students is the first of a full slate of activities during an eight-day trip to Japan and South Korea for the chancellor, who will depart Wednesday.

Hemenway will be accompanied by Jeff Weinberg, assistant to the chancellor; Diana Carlin, dean of the graduate school and international programs; and Dale Slusser, KU Endowment Association director of corporate and foundation support.

All expenses for the trip will be paid by private funds.

On Saturday, the chancellor will head to Seoul for a series of educational activities and donor visits:

 • A lecture at the invitation of the governor of Chungnam Province on U.S. public universities and their relationship to state government.
 • A meeting with the president of the Korea University of Technology and Education to sign preliminary papers for a faculty and student exchange agreement.
 • A reception hosted by the members of the KU Korean Alumni Association to celebrate the KU First fund-raising campaign and their success raising funds for a Korean War Memorial on the KU campus in Lawrence.
 • A visit with Hak Soon Chang to personally thank him for a $100,000 donation earlier this year to KU. Chang had said the gift was in appreciation for the care he received at the KU Medical Center when hospitalized in 1955 for tuberculosis.
 • A visit with Jong Woo Han and Y.B. Min, whose efforts were instrumental in the successful fund drive for the KU Korean War Memorial.
 • Discussion with the president of Sunggyunkwan University about promotion of the exchange agreement signed last year.

Hemenway will return to Kansas June 9.
