Audio-Reader Network at KU wins two international awards

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network received two program awards in Toronto, Canada, during the annual conference in May of the International Association of Audio and Information Services. The award winners were chosen from more than 130 entries.

Audio-Reader received two program awards, including Program of the Year -- Information I for its "Mail Order Catalogs" program and the Public Awareness Award for their "For Your Ears Only" fund-raiser.

According to Audio-Reader Director Janet Campbell, there is no greater honor than being acknowledged by your peers.

"This type of international recognition from peers who share common goals is extremely rewarding," she said. "We're especially proud that our outreach was acknowledged, in addition to our programming."

The weekly half-hour broadcast of "Mail Order Catalogs" is recorded by Audio-Reader volunteer Margi Posten and includes theme-based highlights from a wide variety of catalogs. "For Your Ears Only" is Audio-Reader's annual sale of used albums, CDs and other gently used audio products. The service is accepting donated items for the 2004 fund-raiser, which will be at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Sept. 24 and 25.

The International Association of Audio and Information Services represents more than 140 services that provide reading and accessible printed information to individuals who cannot read conventional print due to blindness or any other visual, physical or learning disability. Member services can be found throughout the United States and Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Africa. The KU Audio-Reader Network was the second reading service established and the first to be affiliated with a university.

Six Audio-Reader staff members attended the conference in Toronto. The association's 2005 convention will be in Lawrence.
