Kansas Public Radio announces March broadcast highlights

LAWRENCE -- Along with the usual offering of classical music, jazz, opera, folk, Celtic, bluegrass, Broadway and swingin' bachelor-pad space-age pop, several special programs will be heard on Kansas Public Radio at the University of Kansas during March.

Laughs will take center stage at 6 p.m. Friday, March 19, when KPR will present a rebroadcast of the "Right Between the Ears" February comedy show. Janet Jackson, President George Bush, Martha Stewart and Pope John Paul II all come in for a comic send-up.

The following day, Saturday, March 20, KPR's "Jazz Scene with David Basse" will feature a live performance by pianist Joe Cartwright, drummer Todd Strait and bassist Bob Bowman. Cartwright has been a jazz performer, teacher and arranger in the Kansas City area for 23 years. He regularly performs at the Majestic Steakhouse and the Fairmont Hotel in Kansas City, Mo. Bowman teaches jazz studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and has extensive performance experience. Strait has played with jazz legends, including Marian McPartland and Woody Herman's big band, and Kansas City artists Karrin Allison and Frank Mahogany.

From Friday, March 26, through Friday, April 2, KPR will conduct the on-air portion of its annual spring pledge drive. KPR raises almost one-third of its operating budget during its two yearly on-air drives. KPR staffers and on-air guests will join with listener-members to keep great public radio on the air in northeast Kansas.

KPR, licensed to KU, broadcasts on KANU 91.5-FM in Lawrence, KANH 89.7-FM in Emporia, KANV 91.3-FM in Olsburg-Manhattan and K210CR 89.9-FM in Atchison.
