Tip sheet: KU commencement will be special for mother, daughter; Grad Grill

LAWRENCE -- Amber Reagan-Kendrick and her daughter, Jehan Reagan, will walk down the Hill together at the University of Kansas commencement on May 23 at Memorial Stadium.

Reagan-Kendrick will earn a doctorate in American studies, and Reagan will graduate with a bachelor's degree in nursing from the KU School of Nursing.

"We will both walk down the Hill hand-in-hand," said Reagan-Kendrick, who is associate director of the Health Careers Pathways program in the KU School of Medicine's Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity.

"Personally, I have beaten the odds, and having a Ph.D. is a humbling experience," Reagan-Kendrick said. "My purpose for going to college was to set an example for my children. More than anything, I wanted them to value education as much as I."

It's a lesson her daughter has taken to heart. Reagan plans to return to KU with the goal of earning master's degrees in public health and public health nursing.

"I'm happy for my mom, because she's worked so hard for it," Reagan said. "I think she has started a tradition in our family that will continue, and hopefully we will all be getting our Ph.Ds."

In addition to earning her doctorate, Reagan-Kendrick has recorded the oral history of African-Americans from 1870 to 1960. She interviewed KU alumni, and the interviews eventually will be transcribed and will reside at University Archives or the Kansas Collection at the Spencer Research Library at KU.
