KU students win 14 awards in Kansas Association of Broadcasters contest

LAWRENCE -- KU students won 14 awards, seven of them first place, in the Kansas Association of Broadcasters student competition, presented in April at the Overland Park Marriott. Winners included students from Kansas high schools, colleges and universities.

Among KU recipients were first-place winners Mark Zillman, Leavenworth senior in journalism, and Jimmy Chavez, San Antonio, Texas, sophomore in journalism, radio sports play-by-play; Christopher Martin, Prairie Village, December 2003 graduate in theatre and film, and Robert McGee, Lincolnville senior in theatre and film, 30-second TV commercial or public service announcement; Justin Lueger, Seneca senior in journalism, TV hard news package; Kendra Buscho, Denver senior in journalism, complete TV news feature; Christopher Martin, TV documentary; Stephen Deaver, Olathe, May 2003 graduate in theatre and film, TV entertainment program; and Jonah Ballow, Lone Tree, Colo., senior in journalism, for TV station Web site.

Second-place KU award winners included Brett Wiard, Hutchinson, August 2003 graduate in journalism, complete TV newscast; Brooke Wehner, Winfield, May 2003 graduate in journalism, hard news TV package; Mike Alzamora, Lawrence, May 2003 graduate in journalism, complete TV news feature; and Alan Wong, radio station Web site.

KU honorable mentions went to Todd Panula, radio sports play-by-play; Steven Beat, radio 60-second commercial or public service announcement; and Falestine Afani-Ruzik, TV documentary.

Steven Beat, junior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, son of Alan and Dianna Beat; Augusta High School; honorable mention in radio 60-second commercial or public service announcement.

From Olathe
Stephen Deaver, May 2003 graduate in theatre and film; Shawnee Mission South High School; first place in TV entertainment program (with Joshua Efron).

From Prairie Village
Christopher Martin, December 2003 graduate in theatre and film, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Martin; Shawnee Mission East High School; first place in 30-second TV commercial or public service announcement and first place in TV documentary.
