KU students earn top ranking with team portfolio at global investment symposium

LAWRENCE -- A six-student team from the University of Kansas received a first-place ranking for their portfolio at the fourth annual Global Student Investment Strategy Symposium, April 1 through 3 at the University of Dayton in Ohio.

The students represented KU's Applied Portfolio Management class, which has been managing an investment portfolio for 11 years. The top-ranked team members are: David Brown, Overland Park senior; Joan Huber, Lawrence teaching assistant; David Iliff, Stilwell senior; Jeremy Richardson, Wichita graduate student; Jacquelyn "Jackie" Summers, Overland Park senior; and Ivo Voynov, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, senior.

The symposium, also known as the Redefining Investment Strategy Education Symposium, focused on investment strategy and style. It consisted of keynote sessions, panel discussions, workshops and a competition between student groups in managing investment portfolios. More than 900 participants from more than 100 colleges and universities participated in the event.

The KU team was one of 12 invited to provide a 20-minute oral presentation about their investment group's strategy and style, performance in 2003 and expectations for the future to a panel of three professional money managers.

The KU portfolio was ranked first in the Hybrid category for the undergraduate division with a return of 122 percent in 2003, the highest overall return for all categories.

The class offers students the chance to learn the intricacies of stock markets around the world. Students learn hands-on while managing and analyzing a portfolio for KU with knowledge gained from interacting with worldwide business and investment professionals.

The class was created in 1993 as a result of a $250,000 contribution by Kent McCarthy, a KU alumnus. Cathy Shenoy, currently in Denmark, is the instructor for the class, which meets during the fall and spring semesters. Professor Allen Ford attended the symposium with the team.
