Statements by chancellor, colleagues on death of Assistant Professor Debra Park

University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway; Executive Vice Chancellor Don Hagen; and Doug Girod, professor and chair of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, made the following statements today in response to the death of Debra Park, research assistant professor of otolaryngology at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Park died of injuries she sustained in a two-car collision Monday. She was 32.

Chancellor Robert Hemenway:

"Dr. Park was a valuable member of the KU family with enormous potential that has now been lost. We are all deeply saddened by her tragic death. On behalf of the entire university, I would like extend our condolences to her friends and family."

Donald Hagen, excutive vice chancellor, KU Medical Center:

"Deb was a gifted scientist with a promising career ahead of her, and a dedicated mother and wife. She was a KU alumna, as well as a faculty member at the School of Medicine and an avid Jayhawk fan. She will be greatly missed."

Doug Girod, professor and chair of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery:

"She will always be remembered as vivacious and full of life, passionate about her work and eager to take on new challenges. She was a part of the core fabric of our department and the clinical research community. We will miss her infectious smile and enthusiasm."
