KU homecoming parade to feature 45 entries, including 7 bands, former queen

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Homecoming Parade will feature 45 entries, including 13 floats, seven bands, 1968 KU homecoming queen Susan Wassenberg Thompson, and Grand Marshal Charlie Gruber, a former KU track star and 2004 Olympian.

(The last KU homecoming queen, Janet Merrick, was crowned in 1969. For more, visit www.kuhistory.com/).

The parade begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Kansas Union and travels down Jayhawk Boulevard to the Chi Omega Fountain.

Five Kansas high schools will participate in the marching band competition -- Brewster Middle and High School; Pleasanton High School; Shawnee Heights High School, Tecumseh; Baxter Springs High School, and Independence High School -- in addition to the KU Marching Band and Spirit Squad and the KU Alumni Band.

Before the parade, pancakes will be served on the lawn of Stauffer-Flint Hall from 8 to 11 a.m. Tickets cost $4.

Saturday's other Homecoming event, of course, is the KU vs. Kansas State football game slated for kickoff at 6:20 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
