KU journalism students win national AEMCJ magazine division awards

LAWRENCE -- Two KU students have won three awards in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication student magazine division national competition.

Winners, announced at the recent AEJMC annual convention in Toronto, were selected from about 200 entries in 10 categories from journalism programs throughout the United States and Canada.

Neil Mulka, Leavenworth senior in journalism and mass communications (news and information emphasis), won two awards.

He received a $100 first place in the People and Places category for "Casting the Curse," published April 8 in Jayplay. The article describes a week on the road with a local band, This Building Is Cursed.

He also received a second-place certificate recognition in the Service and Information category for a Feb. 26 Jayplay article, "Battles Fit for Warriors," about the Barbarian Battles with medieval weapons at the Granada Theater in downtown Lawrence.

Mulka is the son of Michael and Rachel Briney and Leavenworth High School graduate. He is fall 2004 managing editor of Jayplay.

Julie Jones, Tulsa, Okla., senior in journalism and mass communications (news and information emphasis) won a third place certificate award in the magazine startup individual category.

Her entry was for Healthy Alternatives, a bimonthly publication focused on cooking, exercise and personal stories for people with special dietary needs because of diseases, intolerances and allergies.

Jones is the daughter of Dennis and Cheryl Jones and a graduate of Nathan Hale High School.

Carol Holstead, KU associate professor of journalism and mass communications, has directed the AEJMC magazine competition the last eight years.

Founded in 1912 in Chicago, AEJMC is a nonprofit educational association of journalism and mass communication faculty, administrators, students and media professionals with about 3,500 members worldwide.
