"For Your EARS Only" music sale to benefit KU service for the blind

LAWRENCE -- An impressive collection of used audio equipment and more than 10,000 albums, CDs and tapes will be available to the public during the University of Kansas Audio-Reader's second annual "For Your EARS Only" benefit sale next week .

This year's inventory includes donations from several private jazz collections, from Kansas Public Radio and from individuals in the Lawrence, Kansas City, Topeka and Pittsburg areas.

The fund-raiser will be Sept. 24 and 25 in Buildings 1 and 2 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. A $5 donation is requested to attend the sneak preview from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24. Admission is free from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25.

Audio-Reader staff and volunteers say this year's inventory is more diverse, comprising everything from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to Harry James and Duke Ellington, from Mozart and Vivaldi to Bob Dylan and Barbra Streisand. Musicals, movie soundtracks, laser discs and the entire "Twilight Zone" series on video were also donated for this year's sale.

"With most albums available for a $1 donation and CDs for $2, there are incredible bargains to be discovered," Audio-Reader Director Janet Campbell said. "We also have quite a few turntables, videos and audio books. We've been told that this fund-raiser is the largest event of its kind in Kansas."

Last year's sale raised more than $10,000 for Audio-Reader, a special reading service for blind and print-disabled person that offers free broadcasts of current books, magazines, newspapers and other printed materials. Proceeds from the "For Your Ears Only" sale will provide signal expansion and upgrade for the closed-circuit radio broadcasts heard by thousands of visually impaired persons.

A James Bond trivia contest with prizes from the United Kingdom will help shoppers celebrate the fund-raiser's 007 theme. "Diet Another Day" biscotti will also be available at the sale on Saturday.
