KU's Genuine Imitation a cappella student ensemble to perform Sept. 18 and 19

LAWRENCE -- Genuine Imitation, a 12-member a cappella mixed vocal ensemble organized last year by University of Kansas students, will begin its fall performance season Sept. 18 and 19 with two free weekend outdoor concerts at Lawrence city parks.

The group will perform from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the pavilion at South Park, 11th and Massachusetts streets, following the Lawrence Sesquicentennial Parade. On Sept. 19, Genuine Imitation will take part in the KU Choral Society barbecue and concert beginning at 4 p.m. at Buford M. Watson Jr. Park, Sixth and Kentucky streets.

The group will perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 as an opening act for No Better Cause, a pop/rock/R&B male a cappella ensemble from Lincoln, Neb. It plans to participate in the 80th annual Holiday Vespers, the university's Christmas concert featuring choral groups and the symphony orchestra, on Dec. 5 at the Lied Center.

The group's musical repertoire includes oldies, choral works, rock, carols and traditional arrangements, ranging from "Ave Maria" to songs by the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Five for Fighting and the Nylons. The group plans to release its first CD in late fall.

James Daugherty, associate professor of music and dance at KU, is the faculty sponsor. For more information or to contact Genuine Imitation, visit www.genuineimitation.org.
