Band Day, Family Weekend coincide with events across campus this weekend

LAWRENCE -- High school bands from across the state will march at the University of Kansas this weekend, adding to the excitement of KU's annual Family Weekend events.

About 35 bands will travel to Lawrence for the 57th annual parade through downtown and a performance during the halftime show of KU's football game against Toledo at Memorial Stadium.

The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Seventh and Kentucky streets; it will go east to Massachusetts Street and continue to South Park. The football game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will feature a pre-game flyover by two U.S. Air Force T-38 Talon aircraft from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.

Family Weekend will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, with the fifth annual Collage Concert at the Lied Center of Kansas. The concert is a fast-paced visual and performing arts showcase for the diverse talent community in KU's fine arts program. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $7 for students and seniors. Proceeds benefit KU's School of Fine Arts. Call (785) 864-ARTS for more information.

On Saturday, Sept. 11, several schools and departments will open their doors to current and prospective students, their families, community members and KU fans for an opportunity to learn more about programs, facilities and faculty members.

These schools and departments will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday:

-- School of Architecture, 216 Marvin Hall
-- Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, foyer of Wescoe Hall
-- Department of Spanish and Portuguese, foyer of Wescoe Hall
-- School of Business, 206 Summerfield Hall
-- Department of Geography, 213 Lindley Hall
-- Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, 4150 Learned Hall
-- Department of Theatre and Film, lobby of Murphy Hall
-- The Honors Department, Nunemaker Hall

At 9 a.m. Saturday, the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics will conduct a flag-raising ceremony as part of a commemoration of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The institute, which houses a display of beams from the World Trade Center in New York, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Monarch Watch, a division of KU's entymology program designed to promote the conservation of monarch butterflies, invites children and adults to Foley Hall on west campus for information about the butterflies and monarch tagging demonstrations.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, the Department of Music and Dance will host a Day of Dance in the Robinson Center dance studios. High school students from around the state have been invited to take classes, and the public is welcome to watch. Call (785) 864-4264 for more information.

KU museums will be open Friday and Saturday, as will the Student Recreation and Fitness Center, the KU Visitor Center and other facilities.
