KU's Mock Trial silver team ties for fifth at March 11-13 nationals in Florida

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Mock Trial Silver Team concluded the program's best year in its eight-year history by tying for fifth place in its division at the silver national championship tournament, March 11 through 13 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The six-member team with two returning members earned the designation as a Top 10 team among 24 competitors in its division, one of two in the silver finals. The overall national Florida tournament winner, George Washington University, Washington, D.C., was in KU's division.

KU's Team 865 -- the silver, or novice, team of first- and second-year participants -- is one of two KU Mock Trial teams. Team 864, KU's gold team, will head for its national tournament competition April 8 through 10 at Des Moines, Iowa.

Two Team 865 members won individual Silver All-American Awards. Angela Carlon, Shawnee junior and Team 865 captain, received an attorney award for her role as a plaintiff attorney. Caitlin Davies, Olathe freshman, earned a witness award for her portrayal of a psychiatrist. KU's novice team had a 5-3 record at the tournament, and those six tournament team members finished the year at 21-16-1.

Branden Bell, Broken Arrow, Okla., third-year KU law student, coaches KU's Mock Trial teams. Ryan Faulconer, Colorado Springs, Colo., senior, is Mock Trial president and Team 864 captain. About 20 students take part in KU's Mock Trial program.

Program sponsors include KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway, the KU School of Law, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success, Student Senate, and Scott Kaiser of Shook, Hardy & Bacon, a Kansas City, Mo., law firm. Stephen McAllister, KU law dean, is faculty adviser.
