KU graduate Edward Jae-Suk Lee to sign new novel at Oread Books April 14

LAWRENCE -- Edward Jae-Suk Lee will present a reading from his new novel, "The Good Man," followed by a book signing, from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at Oread Books in the Kansas Union at the University of Kansas. The event is free and open to the public.

" The Good Man" (Bridge Works Publishing Company) is the story of an aging Korean war veteran, Gabriel Guttman, who returns to his native Montana in search of redemption. For 40 years Gabriel has been burdened by a terrible secret -- his participation in a massacre during the war. A suicide attempt has left him one-eyed and a partial amnesiac. Lee weaves together present and past as Gabriel comes to terms with both his complex romantic past and his suppressed guilt from the war.

The Los Angeles Times Book Review calls it a "stunning novel," and Publishers Weekly's review calls the novel a "powerful debut."

Lee is a Korean-American and native Kansan who lives in Merriam. He graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School and received a master's degree in English from KU in 2002. He also has a bachelor's degree in biology from Montana State University.

The book signing is part of a series of April events at KU celebrating Korean history and culture, culminating in the dedication of the Korean War Memorial April 16. The weeklong series, "Korea: A Divided Nation on the World Stage," is co-sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the Center for East Asian Studies.
