Human Rights Campaign president to make first major address at KU

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas will be among the first stops on the Human Rights Campaign's yearlong "On the Road to Equality" tour. HRC is the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender political organization.

HRC will launch the tour April 12, making two stops in Topeka before coming to KU for a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. in the Hall Center for the Humanities. Joe Solmonese, who was named president of HRC March 9, is scheduled to discuss equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

The event is free and open to the public. KU's Alternative Breaks, the Student Legislative Awareness Board, Queers and Allies, and the Multicultural Resource Center are sponsoring the event, which will be simulcast on the HRC Web site,

" This is an exciting opportunity for the KU and Lawrence communities," said Kevin Hager, a Shawnee senior who is coordinating the event. "This will be Joe Solmonese's first major public address as HRC's president. We're honored that he's chosen to come to KU."

The event comes one week after Kansas became the 17th state to amend its constitution to ban marriage rights for same-sex couples. Douglas County was the only county in the state to vote against the amendment.

Additional stops during the next two weeks will include Kansas City, Kan.; Detroit; Dallas; and Birmingham, Ala. The tour will continue throughout the year at stops in Nashville, Tenn.; Columbus, Ohio; Georgia; Salt Lake City; New Orleans; Florida; Orange County, Calif.; Nevada; and Minnesota.
