Museum students to discuss Native American collections at KU today

WHAT: A panel of University of Kansas graduate students enrolled in an indigenous museum studies class on grant writing will discuss the Native American collections curated at Spooner Hall at KU; recommendations for improvements; and sources of funding. The students are writing grant proposals to seek funding for recommendations they are making. They also will raise funds by selling donated arts and crafts items at the First Nations Student Association powwow on April 16, which starts at 7 p.m. in Robinson Gymnasium.

WHY: The panel is a session in the Big 12 American Indian Student Leadership Success Conference April 13 through 17 at KU.

WHEN: 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14

WHERE: International Room of the Kansas Union

Following their presentation, students will provide tours of selected Native American collections at the Spooner Hall gallery from 3 to 5 p.m. One of the exhibits, "Crow Indian Traditional Arts and Dance," was curated by Allen Knows Gun, KU graduate student of the Crow Tribe in Montana. His exhibit also will be open to the public in Spooner Hall gallery from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 15.

The students will present the same panel discussion and tour of museum collections at the Native American Professors Conference at KU, April 21 to 23. Their session and tours will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23.

The location of the panel will be available on the indigenous nations studies program Web site, www.ku.edu/~insp/conference. Tours of selected Native American artifacts in Spooner Hall gallery will be from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 23.
