LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas, which saw its Hispanic enrollment rise 20 percent last fall, will host two free information gatherings this month to provide information in Spanish on college preparation and leadership development to the growing Latino population in western Kansas.

KU's Office of Multicultural Affairs, along with several other university offices, will host Mi Familia, Mi Futuro: Del Colegio (College: My Family, My Future) programs Saturday, April 30, in Garden City and Dodge City.

The programs will be formatted to address family issues of social adjustment, higher education and preparation, and leadership development for this population in Spanish. KU also will provide information on college preparation, affording college, academic success and student involvement.

"Our goal is to educate the Latino population about the importance of college and to encourage students to consider the University of Kansas as a transfer student," said Santos Nunez, program director for the KU multicultural affairs office. "We will answer questions in Spanish regarding higher education with a family perspective in mind."

The program is a collaborative effort with Garden City Community College, Dodge City Community College and offices within the KU Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success, including Academic Achievement and Access Center, Dean of Students Office, Department of Student Housing, Freshman-Sophomore Advising Center, KU Writing Center, Office of Admissions and Scholarships, Office of Student Financial Aid, Student Involvement and Leadership Center, and the University Career Center.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. April 30 in Garden City in the Academic Building at Garden City Community College. Registration for the Dodge City program will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union at Dodge City Community College. There is no fee for participation but space is limited. To register for the program, call the Office of Multicultural Affairs at (785) 864-4351.

Efforts to reach out to underrepresented students and families at KU have proven successful in recent years with minority first-time freshmen increasing nearly 10 percent and overall minority enrollment rising more than 4 percent in fall 2004. The university's efforts with retention through the HAWK Link and Multicultural Scholars Program both have been recognized as two of the most successful retention programs for students of color in the nation.
