MEDIA ADVISORY: Governor to sign alternative classified staff legislation at KU Thursday

LAWRENCE -- Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will attend a ceremonial bill signing at the University of Kansas Thursday to commemorate passage of a new state law that allows university classified staff members to leave the state civil service system.

The governor -- who will be joined by KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway, Paul Carttar, executive vice chancellor for external affairs, and several legislators -- will sign Senate Bill 74 at 4 p.m. April 21 in Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union.

The law permits KU and other universities to convert classified staff positions to the unclassified service. The change would allow classified employees to benefit from university funding that could be used to increase wages. The state House of Representatives passed the bill 73-43 and the Senate voted 39-0 to approve. KU classified employees voted to pursue an alternative to state civil service in October 2003.

Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger; members of the KU Classified Senate; employees of KU housing, libraries and facilities operations units; and KU student leaders are expected to attend the ceremony.
