16 students earn awards at Math Awareness Month contests at KU

LAWRENCE -- More than 120 students from fifth through 12th grades in 43 area schools competed for $750 in prizes April 2 at the University of Kansas Mathematics Competition. The competition was part of Mathematics Awareness Month activities in April at KU. Ten students qualified for cash prizes for first through third places, and six earned honorable mention certificates.

The competition focuses on problem solving and critical thinking and is divided up into three age groups: fifth and sixth grades; junior high (seventh, eighth and ninth grades); and senior high (10th through 12th grades). The exams involved five questions with a 40-minute time limit. Jack Porter, professor and chair of mathematics, coordinated the competition. The top three places earn cash awards and certificates, including $100 for first, $75 for second and $50 for third.

The cash-award contest winners will receive their prizes Apri1 26 at KU's mathematics department's annual honors banquet that concludes the month of math-related events and recognizes KU student and faculty mathematics achievements. Honorable mention winners will receive their certificates at their participating schools.
