KU math team places in top 5.5 percent in nation in Putnam contest

LAWRENCE -- A mathematics team of three University of Kansas students placed in the top 5.5 percent nationwide among intercollegiate undergraduate teams in the 65th William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America.

Pedro Lei, Macau senior; Andrew Womack, Lawrence senior; and Xiaobang Yue, Sichuan, China, senior, made up the KU team that placed 28th out of 515 teams across the nation. The team coach is Atanas Stefanov, KU assistant professor of mathematics.

Each team member will receive a $150 cash prize. They will be formally recognized at KU's annual mathematics honors banquet April 26.

Among 3,733 students who participated in the competition, Womack and Yue were in the top 11 percent and Lei in the top 12.5 percent.

Results of the December competition were announced in late March. The examination tests originality as well as technical competence in undergraduate mathematics through differential equations. It is open to all regularly enrolled undergraduates in colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The contest is named for William Lowell Putnam, a member of the Harvard University class of 1882, whose family established the contest in 1938 to honor his enthusiasm for interscholastic academic competitions.
