Frank DeSalvo named interim KU dean of students

LAWRENCE -- Frank DeSalvo, director of Counseling and Psychological Services, has been named interim dean of students at the University of Kansas, Vice Provost for Student Success Marlesa Roney announced today.

DeSalvo replaces Richard Johnson, associate vice provost and dean of students, whose employment was terminated for cause today following an internal investigation.

At the end of March, the university received a formal complaint regarding Johnson, Roney said. An investigation began promptly and Johnson was placed on administrative leave with pay. Based on the investigation, Johnson's employment was terminated.

Because this is a personnel issue, Roney said, she would not provide further details.

Johnson had been dean of students since 2001 and associate vice provost since 2002.

" We are fortunate to have someone with Frank DeSalvo's experience to step in for us during this difficult time of transition," Roney said. "Frank cares deeply about our students and is dedicated to providing the best for them."

DeSalvo came to the university in 1991 to direct Counseling and Psychological Services. DeSalvo holds a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Texas at Austin, a master of science degree in social work from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and a bachelor's degree from St. Francis College in Loretto, Pa.

With 19 departments and more than 600 employees, Student Success provides services and programs essential to the intellectual, cultural, physical, social and moral development of KU students.
