Dole Institute sets August, September White Glove tours of archives

LAWRENCE -- The Robert J. Dole Institute at the University of Kansas announced its monthly White Glove tours, a behind-the-scenes view of the former senator's personal and political archives, for Saturday, Aug. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 17. Due to space limitations, reservations are required for the free tour.

The White Glove tour includes a visit to the reading room, where local and out-of-state visitors research information contained in the Dole Collection. Guests also tour the archival storage area in the lower level. The temperature-controlled area holds more than 4,000 boxes of Dole's personal and political papers and more than 25,000 photographs. Guests also visit the archival processing room, where staff and volunteers process the papers, photographs and artifacts that make up the collection.

Tour guests will receive white gloves to emphasize the importance of using white cotton gloves when handling archival documents. Natural oils on fingers can leave permanent marks on photographs and documents. The 30-minute tour will be led by Jean Bischoff, senior archivist, and by Judy Sweets, audiovisual archivist.

Reservations can be made by phone at (785) 864-1420 or (785) 864-1405, or by e-mail at or
