KU Memorial Unions opts not to resume sales of cereal malt beverages

LAWRENCE -- After a thorough review of a request to reinstate sales of cereal malt beverages, the KU Memorial Corp. on the University of Kansas Lawrence campus has opted not to change current practice at the Kansas Union.

The potential for unintended sales to minors or consumption by minors was a key factor in the decision, said Marlesa Roney, vice provost for student success.

"Given the overall mission of the Kansas Union and the programming that takes place within the building, I do not believe that is a risk worth taking," she said.

The Memorial Union Board in May forwarded to Roney a request to reinstate sales and an implementation plan. Sales were discontinued seven years ago at the recommendation of city-wide task force on the prevention of alcohol abuse.

The KU Student Senate in February passed a resolution requesting that the unions investigate the possibility of reinstating cereal malt beverage sales.
