MEDIA ADVISORY: KU's 'Surprise Patrol' to hand out Kemper Awards starting Aug. 18; Rep. Moore to join event

LAWRENCE -- The 'Surprise Patrol', led by University of Kansas Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway, will begin handing out $5,000 Kemper Awards to unsuspecting KU faculty beginning on Thursday morning, Aug. 18. The Kemper Awards recognize excellence in teaching and advising.

Kansas Third District Congressman Dennis Moore will accompany Hemenway for part of the patrol in the afternoon. Also traveling with the patrol will be representatives from Commerce Bank of Lawrence and the KU Endowment Association.

In all, 20 professors will be honored with Kemper Awards, and $100,000 will be distributed this year. In addition to Aug. 18, the patrol will give out awards Friday, Aug. 19; Monday through Thursday, Aug. 22-25; and Monday, Aug. 29.

The W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence recognize outstanding teachers and advisers at KU as determined by a seven-member selection committee. Now in the 10th year, the awards were established by a $500,000 fund from the William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank, Trustee, and $500,000 in matching funds from KUEA.

The William T. Kemper Foundation was established in 1989 after Kemper's death. It supports Midwest communities and concentrates on initiatives in education, health and human services, civic improvements and the arts.

The media are invited to accompany the 'Surprise Patrol' starting at 2:15 p.m. The patrol will gather in the chancellor's office on the second floor of Strong Hall. Transportation to the winners' classrooms will be available. To join the patrol at an earlier or later time, or for more information, contact Dan Lara at (785) 864-8855 or Todd Cohen at (785) 864-8858.
