Coming soon to a school near you: KU 'Rock Chalk Roadshow,' Aug. 28-Sept. 2

LAWRENCE -- For the third year, University of Kansas staff will be taking the "Rock Chalk Roadshow" to 55 high schools and community colleges in central and western Kansas, Aug. 28 through Sept. 2.

Staffed by KU's Office of Admission and Scholarships the Rock Chalk Roadshow will cover more than 2,000 miles in a swing through 46 cities in 33 counties to meet school counselors, parents and students.

In addition to visiting with school counselors during the day, the roadshow will host information receptions for students and parents in five cities along the way on Sunday afternoon and during the evenings.

KU administrators joining the roadshow crew for the information nights include Marlesa Roney, vice provost for student success; Lisa Pinamonti Kress, admissions director and Jen Shoemaker, admissions counselor. In addition to greeting parents and students, Roney, Kress and Shoemaker will present "A Day in the Life of a Jayhawk," provide background on KU's admissions process as well as provide giveaway items and informational materials. Free pizza and refreshments will be provided by the KU Alumni Association.

Kress said: "Students from central and western Kansas are among our top achievers at KU. It is important for KU to be visible in this part of the state to help inform prospective students of the opportunities available to them at KU."

The information nights for parents and students will be in following cities:

  • Hutchinson area, KU Law Enforcement Center, south of Yoder, 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28
  • Dodge City at DCCC Student Union, 2501 N. 14th St, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 29
  • Goodland High School, 1209 Cherry St., 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30
  • Hays High School, 2300 E. 13th St., 6 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 31
  • Concordia High School, 436 W. 10th St., 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 1.

KU's roadshow travels with two vans allowing the staff to divide each day's itinerary and visit more counselors' offices in high schools and community colleges during the day. The roadshow crew carries with them information about KU's excellent academic programs and national rankings, financial aid, scholarships and more.

The 33 counties on the roadshow schedule for 2005 are: Barton, Clay, Cloud, Dickinson, Edwards, Ellis, Ellsworth, Finney, Ford, Geary, Gove, Graham, Greeley, Hamilton, Hodgeman, Lane, Lincoln, Logan, Ness, Osborne, Ottawa, Pawnee, Reno, Rice, Rooks, Russell, Saline, Sheridan, Sherman, Stafford, Thomas, Trego and Wallace.

This is the first year the roadshow will be visiting schools in nine of the counties: Clay, Dickinson, Geary, Greeley, Hamilton, Hodgeman, Lane, Ness and Wallace. During the three years, the KU roadshow has visited 52 counties.

The daily itinerary for the KU Rock Chalk Roadshow includes stops at the following high schools and community colleges:

Monday, Aug. 29: Barton County Community College, Chase, Great Bend, Hutchinson HS and Trinity Catholic HS, Kinsley, Larned, Macksville, Nickerson and Spearville, Stafford

Tuesday, Aug. 30: Dighton, Dodge City HS and Dodge City Community College; Gove, Holcomb, Jetmore, Ness City, Oakley, Sharon Springs, Syracuse, Tribune

Wednesday, Aug. 31: Colby HS and Colby Community College, Ellis, Goodland, Grainfield, Grinnell, Hill City, Hoxie, Ogallah, Quinter and WaKeeney

Thursday, Sept. 1: Cawker City, Downs, Hays HS and Thomas More Prep Marian, Osborne, Plainville, Russell, Stockton, Sylvan Grove and Wilson

Friday, Sept. 2: Clay Center, Clyde, Concordia, Junction City, Minneapolis, Salina Central HS, Salina South HS and Sacred Heart HS, Solomon and Wakefield
