Fiske Guide lauds KU as 'best buy'; U.S. News cites KU as top 50 public university

LAWRENCE -- The 2006 Fiske Guide to Colleges lauds the University of Kansas as one of 14 "best buys" among public universities in the nation. The guide describes KU as "one heck of a deal" and praises several of KU's top-rated academic programs, the activism of its student body and the beauty of the Lawrence campus.
The Fiske Guide is the nation's oldest and most highly rated college guide.

In the newest edition, the guide gives KU four out of five stars in the categories of academics, social life and quality of life and says the "academic achievements of each incoming class continue to rise." KU was the only college from Kansas featured in the guide.

The guide states that KU students describe the academic atmosphere as competitive. "The courses require a steady workload throughout the semester that, at times, can be quite rigorous," said one KU junior.

In addition, professors earn high marks for their teaching ability and dedication. "There is a drive to bring in well-rounded professors who have experience working with the topic professionally," said one student.

The university was cited for "unusual strength" in its architecture (among 20 major public universities), business (among 35 public universities), journalism (among 28 major universities), engineering (among 39 public universities) and film/television programs (among 19 major universities).

Other strong programs include biological sciences, environmental studies, nursing, pharmacy, social welfare, premed studies, and Spanish and Portuguese.

Meanwhile, the 2006 edition of "America's Best Colleges" from U.S. News again ranks KU as a top 50 public university that offers a wide range of undergraduate majors, as well as master's and doctoral degrees.

KU tied for 31st among public universities on the magazine's peer assessments survey. This survey allows top academics -- presidents, provosts and deans of admission -- to score the intangibles at different universities, such as faculty dedication to teaching

U.S. News' 2006 edition of America's Best Graduate Schools, released earlier this year, ranked 26 KU graduate among the top 25 in their discipline.
