Psychology professor receives latest Kemper Award at KU Edwards Campus

LAWRENCE -- Greg Simpson, professor of psychology and acting associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas, is the latest recipient of a $5,000 Kemper Award, given in recognition of faculty members' excellence in teaching and advising.

KU Edwards Campus Vice Chancellor Bob Clark along with representatives from Commerce Bank and the KU Endowment Association, presented the award to Simpson at the KU Edwards Campus this afternoon.

Simpson has taught numerous psychology courses at KU for 10 years. He challenges himself to relate his subject matter to real life and is not afraid to use his own experiences, from what his students have come to know as the "Simpson archives," as examples to help them understand the subject. Simpson's passion for teaching is something his students have come to enjoy and the reason why they recommend him to other students.

So far, 15 professors have received Kemper Awards. Twenty professors in all will be honored and $100,000 in total distributed. The patrol will give out more awards on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 24 and 25, and Monday, Aug. 29

The W.T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence recognize outstanding teachers and advisers at KU as determined by a seven-member selection committee. Now in the 10th year, the awards were established by a $500,000 fund from the William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank, Trustee, and $500,000 in matching funds from KUEA.

The William T. Kemper Foundation was established in 1989 after Kemper's death. It supports Midwest communities and concentrates on initiatives in education, health and human services, civic improvements and the arts.
