Life after college: Parachute program bus rolls onto campus Sept. 6

LAWRENCE - The Parachute Express Bus will roll onto the University of Kansas campus and park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in front of Mrs. E's Cafeteria in Lewis Hall, 1530 Engel Road, for a day of career planning activities designed by the Parachute College Program, based in Point Richmond, Calif.

The Parachute College Program is being sponsored by the University Career Center as one way to help get students get started in planning their careers, said David Gaston, center director. "Our staff will join the Parachute Team to offer students information about career planning services available on campus."

Too often students think about visiting a campus career center when their graduation day is a few months away, Gaston said. "Our purpose in sponsoring the Parachute College Program bus is to get students to think about career planning as they progress through their majors and to get in the habit of using our services."

Diana San Diego, a Parachute team member, said, Parachute has devised an innovative way of encouraging students to manage their career and personal lives and their business lives.

San Diego is one of four recent college graduates staffing the 40-foot Tiffin Phaeton deluxe motor home outfitted with a top-notch sound system and an Xbox that gets students' attention from the moment it rolls onto campus and promotes a healthy attendance.

Students can sign up for free Parachute Student Memberships, which include a profile page on www.parachute.com, business cards, access to multimedia tutorials, an insider recruiting newsletter, and other resources. The Parachute Express Bus also offers a business card center, where students can get business cards to use when networking and interviewing. The Bus Team also runs a variety of mini-workshops, games, and contests from the Parachute Express Bus to promote its larger events.

KU is one of 132 universities nationwide that is partnering with the Parachute College Program - and one of three universities in Kansas participating. The Parachute bus is on the road for its fall tour from Aug. 31 through Nov. 16 and will make about 30 stops.

Inspired by Richard N. Bolles' global best-selling career book What Color Is Your Parachute?, Parachute is an organization focused on helping people manage their business and life.
