4 groups focus of football tailgating fund-raiser in 2005; guidelines revised

LAWRENCE -- Four University of Kansas groups will benefit when the 2005 version of the "Proud to Be a Jayhawk" tailgating fund-raising promotion at home football games gets under way at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.

The four activities are the KU Center for Community Outreach, KU Spirit Squad, the KU Sports Clubs, and the Nichols League student leadership fund. One dollar from every KU football program sold goes to assist the four activities.

Guidelines for 2005 have been revised to permit fans to tailgate with alcohol during a three-hour pre-game period and during half time in the designated tailgating area. Tailgating with alcohol will not otherwise be permitted during game time.

"This will be the fifth year of responsible tailgating, and we're so pleased our fans have helped make it part of the great game-day atmosphere around Memorial Stadium," said Jim Marchiony, KU associate athletics director. "We hope that even those fans who don't tailgate will consider buying a KU football program to lend support to the worthwhile activities promoted by our 'Proud to Be a Jayhawk' initiative."

Consistent with Board of Regents and KU policies, alcohol can be consumed only by individuals of legal age during this official fund-raising event in the designated area and only during the specified times. A map of the designated area is available online.

The tailgating guidelines:

  • Alcohol may be consumed only during a three-hour period before kickoff and during half time in the designated tailgating area.
  • Underage drinking, disorderly conduct or other unlawful conduct will not be tolerated.
  • No kegs or other containers with a capacity greater than 1 gallon may be brought into this area. Fans are strongly encouraged not to use or bring glass containers.
  • Alcohol may not be brought into Memorial Stadium.

Last year, $4,883 in tailgating funds from football program sales for the 2004 season were divided equally among the KU Korean War Memorial Fund, the KU Spirit Squad, the KU Sports Clubs, and the Nichols League student leadership fund.
