KU School of Engineering announces MATHCOUNTS competition winners

LAWRENCE -- Six individuals and three teams from area schools were deemed winners at the 22nd annual MATHCOUNTS Topeka Regional Competition Saturday, Feb. 5, at the University of Kansas School of Engineering. Fifty-one students from nine elementary and middle schools competed in the timed mathematics competition, which emphasizes both individual and team skills.

The top finishing teams were:

1st place - Shawnee Heights Middle School, Tecumseh
Team members are: Drew Hansen, Kelli Krueger, Dustin Mulligan and Eric Strand. The coach is Suzanne Jordan.
2nd place - West Junior High School, Lawrence
Team members are Trevor Everett, Dravid Joseph, Rodi Torres-Gavosto and JD Wiebe. The coach is Estela Gavosto.
3rd place - Central Junior High School, Lawrence
Team members are Ruth Byers, Logan Cartland, Timothy Clark and McKean Parker. The coach is Dari Hilbert.

The top finishing individuals were:
1st place - Sam Ho, Washburn Rural Middle School, Topeka
2nd place - Drew HansenHANSON?, Shawnee Heights Middle School, Tecumseh
3rd place - Eric Strand, Shawnee Heights Middle School, Tecumseh
4th place - Rodi Torres-Gavosto, West Junior High School, Lawrence
5th place - Kelli Krueger, Shawnee Heights Middle School, Tecumseh
6th place - Dylan Davis, Washburn Rural Middle School, Topeka

These teams and individuals will advance to the Kansas MATHCOUNTS Competition on March 5 at the Salina Bicentennial Center. About 130 students are expected to compete. The top four finishers of the Kansas competition will progress to the national contest May 5 through 8 in Detroit, Mich. The coach of the top-finishing team will advance as the team coach.

MATHCOUNTS is a national mathematics enrichment, coaching and competition program that increases enthusiasm for and enhances achievement in middle schools throughout the United States.

South Junior High School, Lawrence
Southwest Junior High School, Lawrence
Topeka Collegiate School, Topeka
Washburn Rural Middle School, Topeka
West Junior High School, Lawrence

Volunteers from the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers, together with faculty and student assistants from the KU School of Engineering, administered, proctored and scored Saturday's competition in the Spahr Engineering Classroom in Eaton Hall.

In Kansas, MATHCOUNTS is sponsored by the Engineers Foundation of Kansas.
