Award-winning composer to give lecture, recital as artist-in-residence at KU

LAWRENCE -- Award-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank will present a public lecture and piano recital Feb. 21 as part of her stay at the University of Kansas as an artist-in-residence.

The presentation will be at 7:30 p.m. in Swarthout Recital Hall, Murphy Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Frank, praised by the Washington Post as a composer of "unself-conscious mastery," will spend a total of six weeks teaching KU students in group and individual lessons. Her stay will comprise three separate two-week residencies over this year and next.

Frank's compositions, incorporating South American mythology, art, poetry and folk music into Western classical forms, reflect her Peruvian-Jewish heritage and have been heard across North and South America. Frank is also a concert pianist who recently recorded a CD of music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Leslie Bassett, and is featured on a forthcoming CD of her chamber music.

Frank has been honored by a number of organizations, including ASCAP, the Theodore Presser Music Foundation, the Society of Composers Inc., the National Federation of Music Clubs, the International Alliance of Women in Music, the National Endowment for the Arts, National Public Radio, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Composers Forum, Arts International, Meet the Composer, and the inaugural Raymond and Beverly Sackler Music Composition Prize, for which she wrote "An American in Peru," a work that combines Jewish and Peruvian music to recount her father's travels in South America as a Peace Corps volunteer.
