Memorial run/walk will raise money for social welfare scholarship at KU

LAWRENCE -- A 4-mile run/walk in Olathe this spring will raise money to create a scholarship at the University of Kansas in memory of a slain social welfare student.

The Teri Mathis Zenner Memorial 4 Mile Run/Walk and Kids Run will take place at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Heritage Park in Olathe. Registration will begin at 6:30 a.m.

Proceeds from entry fees will help endow a scholarship fund at the KU Endowment Association in Zenner's name for graduate students in social welfare at KU. Zenner's friends, family and colleagues are organizing the race.

Zenner was killed Aug. 17, 2004, while making a routine visit to a client as part of her job at Johnson County Mental Health Center. The Olathe native had been enrolled at KU's Edwards Campus in Overland Park and expected to earn her master's degree in social welfare in 2005.

Event organizers are creating a race that will accommodate runners, walkers, wheelchair athletes and children. Awards will be made to the overall top finisher as well as top finishers among male and female wheelchair athletes, and men and women in eight age groups.
