KU sets records for universitywide and Lawrence campus spring enrollment

LAWRENCE -- Records were broken for the second consecutive year at the University of Kansas as spring enrollment numbers reached new heights for total enrollment and for enrollment at the Lawrence campus, data released today show.

Spring enrollment rose for the eighth consecutive year at KU's Lawrence campus and for the fourth straight year at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. The medical center is home to the schools of medicine, nursing and allied health.

Total spring enrollment rose to a record 27,890, surpassing last spring's mark of 27,772. Before 2004, the previous record was set in 1993 at 27,569. Total spring enrollment includes students at the Lawrence campus, the medical center and the KU Edwards Campus, KU's graduate and degree-completion campus in Overland Park.

" KU makes a concerted effort to see that our students succeed, particularly during their freshman and sophomore years, when staying the course each semester is so very important," said Chancellor Robert Hemenway. "These numbers reflect our success with retention as well as the fact that KU continues to be a popular choice among students in and outside of Kansas."

For the Lawrence campus, spring enrollment rose to 25,379, breaking the record of 25,348, set during spring 2004. Lawrence campus numbers include the Edwards Campus.

The medical center, which is at its highest enrollment level since 1996, rose to 2,511 students, up from 2,424 in 2004. The medical center's highest enrollment was 2,674 in 1994.

KU is the largest university in the Kansas Board of Regents system. KU has more Kansas residents enrolled -- 19,236 -- for spring 2005 than any other state university. KU increased its enrollment of Kansas residents in spring 2005 from spring 2004 by 260 students. KU also has more nonresidents enrolled -- 8,654 -- for spring 2005 than any other state university.

The Board of Regents figures show a systemwide increase of 250 students for a 0.3 percent increase in spring 2005 over spring 2004. The six state universities reported a combined enrollment of 82,275 students. The total number of Kansas residents enrolled at state universities is 63,670.
