Traveling exhibit at KU offers up-close look at award-winning book designs

LAWRENCE -- Graphic design students, professional designers and book lovers soon will have a chance to view award-winning book and jacket designs from some of the nation's most well-known scholarly presses.

A traveling exhibit featuring winners of the 2004 Association of American University Presses Book, Jacket and Journal Show will be on display at the University Press of Kansas, 2502 Westbrooke Circle (same building, new address), from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays beginning Monday, March 14, through Thursday, March 24. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Visitors can open and study the displayed books to examine the quality of their design and book crafting, and they will receive a free copy of the show catalog containing design specifications and jurors' comments.

The 2004 exhibit features 43 books, 29 jackets and covers, and one journal. For judging purposes, the books were divided into categories of typographic, illustrated, poetry and literature, and reference. Winners were selected from 309 books, 348 jackets and covers, and eight journals published in 2003 that were submitted by university presses. Judges chose books for superior layout of typography or illustration; jackets and journals were judged for outstanding overall design.

The book and journal judges were Peter Cocking, art director of Douglas & McIntyre Publishing Group in Vancouver, B.C.; Charles Nix, chair of communication design at the Parsons School of Design in New York; Peter Buchanan-Smith, teacher of graphic design at the School of Visual Arts in New York; and Gabriele Wilson, book jacket designer for Alfred A. Knopf in New York.

The juried show was established in 1964 to recognize meritorious achievement and as a means for members of the Association of American University Presses to share ideas for "intelligent, creative and resourceful bookmaking."
