KU chancellor to speak to students about World Economic Forum experience

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway will speak tomorrow to students about his experience attending the World Economic Forum last month in Switzerland.

The chancellor will speak at 8 p.m. March 1 in 427 Summerfield Hall as part of the Association of International Students in Science Economics and Commerce (AIESEC) annual lecture series, which is free and open to the public.

" This year's World Economic Forum topics, including poverty, health care, Africa and AIDS, closely relate to the mission and vision of AIESEC," said Adrienne Hill, AIESEC chapter president.

AIESEC is the world's largest student nonprofit organization and is devoted to increasing cultural awareness and understanding.

Hemenway attended the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum Jan. 26 to 30. Under the theme "Taking Responsibility for Tough Choices," the meeting brought together more than 2,250 participants, primarily business and government leaders. Attendees included British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Microsoft Corp. CEO Bill Gates, who co-chaired the event. Hemenway was one of 172 academic leaders in attendance.

The forum featured more than 200 sessions and daily themes addressing topics from global warming to the spread of AIDS.

AIESEC chapters, such as the one at KU, facilitate the international exchange of students and recent graduates through internships abroad, and are present in more than 800 universities and 80 countries. The Kansas chapter of AIESEC has consistently led the nation in numbers of students sent abroad and has recently established an annual lecture series to provide a forum for local companies, students and faculty members to learn about current issues affecting international business.

Space for the event is limited. Large groups attending should contact the AIESEC Kansas chapter president, Adrienne Hill, at afhill@ku.edu or at (816) 210-9050 to make arrangements.
