Union, Oread bookstores team up with KU students to support tsunami relief

LAWRENCE -- Ten percent of sales at the bookstores in the Kansas and Burge unions between Jan. 31 and Feb. 4 may be donated to a relief fund for Indian Ocean tsunami victims as part of a student-led campaign at the University of Kansas.

The KU and Oread bookstores in the Kansas Union, and the KU Bookstore in the Burge Union are participating in the Tsunami Relief Campaign, led by the KU Center for Community Outreach.

For every customer who mentions he is making a purchase to support the campaign, 10 percent of the customer's sale will go to support the cause. The cashier will fill out a voucher for the net total of the qualifying items. Vouchers will be collected and totaled at the end of the benefit period, and a check will be issued to KU UNICEF within two weeks of the benefit closing date.

Product exclusions include textbooks, computers and electronics.

KU UNICEF is a nonprofit organization founded in 2001 and is a branch of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, which raises funds for children around the world through yearly events. The KU chapter of UNICEF serves to inform the campus and the Lawrence community about UNICEF's purpose, while raising awareness and funds for children in need.

The Center for Community Outreach is a division of Student Senate founded in 1994 as a "community-service clearinghouse" for KU students. The nonprofit organization offers 15 service programs to the KU and Lawrence communities while maintaining contact with various service agencies throughout Kansas. The center works in partnership with Alternative Breaks and is a prime resource for students interested in community service.
