Statement by chancellor on the death of KU law student Andy Keenan

University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway issued the following statement today in response to the death this morning of KU law student Andrew "Andy" Keenan, 26, of Ness City following a long battle with brain cancer. The KU law school faculty this month voted to award Keenan his juris doctorate, and his diploma was delivered to him on Friday. He would have completed his degree in May. Funeral services are pending.

"On behalf of the entire university community, I want to express profound sorrow at the death of Andy Keenan and offer our deepest sympathies to his fiancee, family and friends. Andy demonstrated an uncommon courage as he fought his illness and remained resolute about finishing his law degree. He will be missed."

Statement by Webb Hecker, associate dean of the KU School of Law:

"Andy Keenan was stricken with brain cancer midway through his law school career. But he never gave up his fight against his disease or his struggle to earn his law degree. His faith, courage and determination over the past 22 months have been an inspiration to all who witnessed his fight. His passing is a terrible loss to the KU law family, but we will remember and be proud of him always."
